We just got back to the hotel from the Norfolk show, and thought that since this was the end of Don's tour, we'd sum up what we loved about these shows.
10. New Boots. Don's not sporting his familiar old work boots, but rather a shiny new pair. They look super-cool.
9. The "Vibe". While most people are sick of the suits from the Long Road Out of Eden Tour, with the rest of the band sporting black on black outfits, Lance and Michael Thompson's cool Fedoras and the vintage-cladbacking singers, there's a cool kind of sophistication going on on the stag
8. Don's guitar playing. He's playing more than we've ever seen him before. It's awesome!
7. The Jack Nicholson impression. Yes, many of us have heard the story behind Last Worthless Evening before, but it's evolved into a wonderful tale with an extended Jack Nicholson impression. "Excellent Work, Henley" indeed.
6. The thought and time Don puts into creating a set-list. His autumnal theme brings home the idea of the passage of time. Don selects songs like "September Song" and "I Put a Spell on You" to set the mood.
5.. Rocking out on the hits. Don hits his groove in the second half of the show and Dirty Laundry and I Will Not Go Quietly ROCK!
4. Don's amazing band. Steuart Smith is such a melodic guitar player. Will Hollis' piano intro to "It Don't Matter to the Sun" is stirring. Lance and Michael add a cool vibe to the mix and Scott Crago is amazing as always.
3. Peter Thorn. We've singled him out because he's new and he is awesome! His guitar solo in Life in the Fastlane shows that he has what it takes and we hope he becomes a permanent member of Don's band.
2. Hanging out with other fans. It's always such a pleasure to see old friends and meet new ones at these shows.
1. "It Don't Matter to the Sun". There are no words to describe how perfect this song is. Don's vocals were the best of the night and he puts so much emotion into it. You'd swear he wrote it. It would be a CRIME if he didn't record this (as well as Ghost in this House which he covered in Linden last year). This song was the highlight of both shows we saw...but especially tonight in Norfolk. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing.
Thank you Don for more wonderful shows to add to our memories!
**y'all are right. Because this is rock and roll, we can go to 11. A bonus? Hearing Please Come Home for Christmas
