All Reggae Don's Glasgow Review
Link: Eagleland // View topic - Hampden Stadium - Glasgow 23rd June 2006.
Last night at Hampden was my third Eagles gig having seen them in 1977 and in 1996. Unfortunately I missed 2001 as I was on holiday.
Undoubtedly last night was the best in terms of sound and musicianship but there is definitely no contest between a stadium concert and the intimate atmosphere that existed in one of the best rock venues in the world ā the Glasgow Apollo. A vocal performance that will stay with me till the day I die was Randy Meisner singing Take It to the Limit on the Hotel California tour in 1977. Breathtaking and untouchable (sorry Glen)
Anyway enough history, the concert opened with Take It Easy and continued with various standards like Witchy Woman, One of these Nights etc. The first section was fairly low key although superbly performed as always and only small pockets of the audience were on their feet during various songs.
It has to be said that Joe did not look too happy on what was a damp, and Iām sure to him, chilly evening. Don also looked pretty uncomfortable and wore a waterproof jacket throughout the show.
After the break though the volume was cranked up and the guys really seemed to get into it ā and so did the crowd.
The band effortlessly churned out song after song with some brilliant vocal performances from Don and Glen. Joe (who seemed much happier now) showed what a great guitarist he really is. Tim was his usual rock solid self both vocally and on bass. Stueart is undoubtedly at least as good as Don Felder ever was and he definitely seems to have added something to the band.
This was a fantastic show and there is no doubt the Eagles are still the best live act in the world but, if the guys come back in the future, I will make sure I am much nearer the stage as half way through the show I realised I was actually watching the big screens far more than the stage. Whilst this is probably the norm at stadium gigs it does detract from the overall experience of a live show.
