Welcome to our quiet corner of donhenleyfans.com where you can pull up a chair, get cozy, sip a cup of warm tea and read some books Don Henely has mentioned reading. If you look over to the side, you'll see the list we've come up with. This library of sorts is a work in progress. If you've read one of the books and want to write up a review (or just provide a general synopsis), please send us an e-mail and we'll gladly post it for you. If you can remember where Don mentioned the books, let us know that as well. Some of these have just been in our heads so long that we have to research to find the original mention.
Our intention is to eventually include books in which Don is mentioned or that Don has had a part in creating. Stick with us...and enjoy your reading! This post will stay at the top of the blog, so make sure to scroll down to see if there's anything new here.
He read Black Sun by Edward Abbey. It's in an old photo of him on your fastlane site.

Don has often credited Emerson's wonderful essay, "Self Reliance" for giving him when he was younger the courage and inspiration to become a songwriter.

It almost goes without saying that one of the first additions to this list should be Don's "Heaven is Under Our Feet," his compilation of environmental essays which he edited and produced as a fundraiser for the Walden Woods Project.

Agreed, Gail, but that will be added to the list of books that Don has contributed to/been written about in. Thanks!

How about some of Carl Sagan's work like "The Demon Haunted World" and "Contact"?

In an interview regarding exploring devilish themes for writing "In the Garden of Allah," Don mentioned Mikhail Bulgakov's classic novel, "The Master and Margarita." I read it 25 years ago and as I'm re-reading it now, I'm finding it even more fascinating and thought provoking.

Having just completed reading "The Ecology of Commerce," I now see why Don has been so supportive of this book. Its solution-oriented thrust is brilliant and refreshing. It also makes crystal clear that a healthy environment AND economic prosperity are partners and not mutually exclusive. In other words, the future belongs to those who conduct their business in a "green" way. Paul Hawkin is a genius. Buy it and give it to every business owner you know.

The Black Sun book in the photo was really written by Geoffrey Wolff.

Don mentioned Wallace Stegner's "Angle of Repose" as a piece of literature that should be included the National Time Capsule when he was interviwed about ideas for it.
