Eden Flying Off Shelves

Updates from my morning perusal of HITS:

FAST COMPANY: The Eagles’ Long Road Out of Eden, which hit shelves at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club yesterday, generated the biggest first-day sales total ever for the chain, “by far,” according to a Wal-Mart source. He wouldn’t give the figure, but he did say it exceeded projections by 50%.

MORE FAST COMPANY: The Eagles will soar to #1 on this week's Clear Channel Top 200 On Demand chart, with nearly 300k plays and 411k page views. Long Road Out of Eden was streamed on 620 stations as part of CC’s Sneak Peeks promo.

AIRBORNE AGAIN: Long Road Out of Eden, The Eagles’ first studio album in 28 years, debuts at #1 on the European charts and is expected to top the charts in every territory in which it’s available. Meanwhile, in the U.S., where the band has an exclusive arrangement with Wal-Mart, the CD is reportedly flying off the shelves on day one of release.

I don't know of too many people that will shop Wal*Mart because of its business practices. I'm surprised the Eagles didn't know that. For those interested, I found a link from the Eagles MySpace where you can purchase their "Long Road Out of Eden" CD online and listen to their music:
http://www.myspace.com/eaglesmusic

I was very much looking forward to the release, but since it's sold exclusively at Wal-Mart, I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

Hopefully, some of these artists will finally learn that it's not a great idea to sell your music in a store where two-thirds of us refuse to shop.

I pre-ordered the CD at CD-WOW! When it hit the stores I didn't receive my copy and after 4 days of waiting I canceled the order, asked for a refund and bought it at a nearby CD-shop. I payed € 4 more but who cares? We are talking about The Eagles!

I think this CD is going to pass OOTN and HC in sales. Everywhere you go you see the CD's in stores and people are buying them as if it were sixpacks.

I don't care what critics write. For 99% those people have no clue what good music is all about

28 years is a long time to wait for great music by the Eagles, and it's arrived. I haven't heard the whole CD yet( got it Thursday, two days after it was released..so it came quicker than expected)but so far it's terrific...I ejected it from the car CD player just as" No More Cloudy Days"...everything else is wonderful. The acoustic guitars on "No More Walk in the Woods" is terrific...a Crosby, STills, Nash and "Seven Bridges Road" type song. Nice to hear the boys again as a team. So what if Glenn's songs sound 1980's..he was popular with "The One you Love", "The Heat is On" Smuggler's Blues" and "You Belong to the City". So what if it's Electric piano/keyboard..."New Kid in Town" opens with electric keyboards....

I love love love this new album!! It's so wonderful to hear the new songs from our guys! They still are doing their best quality work. Wow! 20 NEW songs to ride in the convertible with top down and my hair blowing in the breeze! :) Fall, Winter, and Spring in AZ is looking fantastic now!!

I am surprised they are selling the album at such a low price. The need astronomical sales numbers indeed to make a real good profit. For us consumers it's real bargain, although it is selling at a much higher prise in Europe.

My husband was in WM yesterday and said it looked like it was selling like crazy! I'm glad they're as indifferent about the critics these days as the critics are about them. It is a great album, and most of the reviews I've seen put it right up there with HC and OOTN, which says a lot.

Sorry, from a substantive point of view, this CD is their worst ever no matter how much it sells.

There were 3 CDs left in the Burke, VA Walmart store.

Folks, I have the good fortune of being a
pianist/singer in Chicago. I get to sing
all of my favorite Eagles songs, including
Do Something and How Long on a nightly basis.
Audiences are really responding to
the new tunes. So let me just say, I LOVE
THE EAGLES. God bless the guys and please
come to Chicago for a concert. PLEASE !!!

The Eagles have never been the critics' darlings. They know how to play their instruments, they do pitch perfect vocals, and they can write real SONGS.

Critics wanna be different. they can't allow themselves to like something that a million others already enjoy. What would set them apart from the stupid masses they have to write their eloquent rubbish for?

But in the end, it's us, the consumers, the ordinary average general public. The millions of nobodies. We do the talking.

All the millions of people who've bought an Eagles album or two, over the last 40 years, know they make great albums, no matter what the critics say or what the current trends are.

The Eagles are a class act... and there's no substitute for class.

When I bought my copy, the lady stocking them said they were selling quickly. Anyone having a problem with the digital pre-order from the site? I haven't found anything about it...

Just went to Wal Mart and there was maybe 10 left of the shelf. It will sell 3 million by Christmas easy. I predict between 500,000 and a 1,000,000 units the first week.

Genius marketing move to put it in Wal-mart on halloween, thats where everyone goes to get candy and halloween stuff, however this album would do great anywhere they sold it...it is the eagles haha

I agree with Marvin. Damn the critics! The fans are out in force. As someone who sells lots of product throught big box retailers I can tell you the Eagles display at WalMart is in THE premium spot in their stores up front. The 4'x 4' pallet display is huge and they should set records for sales of CD's. I guarantee other "marquee" acts will follow their lead with this deal. Can you say 3 million units before December 31? You can quote me on that.

Exactly - no big surprise !!!

Quite predicatable that the fans would eat it up and the critics would be indifferent.
