FYI - If you bought your tickets online from Vault 350 site (www.vault350.com), go to the Will Call window to pick up your tickets before the show. The don't mail tickets out. Also, the transaction will show up as "Malibu Inn" which is their parent.

Downtown Long Beach maps: http://www.downtownlongbeach.org/content/maps_fr.html

I wasn't offered will call, they offered me either an e-ticket or shipping, $10 priority or $40(!!!) overnight. Maybe due to location? Just happy to be going, though. :)

Did you make it to the show, Melanie? I think they are still putting together their ticket sales procedures. Their ordering page looked a little different this week from the time I ordered my ticket.

We sure had a very loud crowd. Crazy! Joe was very proud of this band. If you like it loud, you gotta go! These are bunch of fine musicians who know how to rock. I'd like to see more coming in the future with this line up.

No surprises in terms of set list, but you'll be amazed and fully entertained, if you love Joe stuff.

Joe Walsh
August 10, 2004
The Vault 350
Long Beach, CA

As Joe only seems to play solo dates on the west coast over the last few years, “Go West Old Man” was the call. So West I went from CT to take in Joe’s solo show at The Vault 350 in Long Beach California on Tuesday, August 10.

To begin, the venue (formerly a Bank, hence “The Vault”) is worthy of mention here, as the house sound system, staging and lighting are excellent.
For the show, I situated myself dead center in the pit about 20 feet back from the stage so that I would be in the primary sound field. Joe’s rig was sent to the house mains in stereo via a mic on each of his 2 amp cabinets and the sound was just spectacular. Loud too!

After an entertaining opening set from the vocally strong Beth Hart, the house lights went down at 9:28 PM and the audience waited (and waited, and waited) for the appearance of the great Joe Walsh. Finally, at 9:50 PM, out strolled the band followed by the Kangol capped J.W. with his Rickenbacker GF model axe slung over his shoulder. After a “How Ya’ Dooin, are you ready?”, the show kicked off with Look at Us Now. The drumming duo of Steve Ferrone and Drew Hester gave this opener a real kick and Joe’s slide parts cut right to the bone.

The set continued with the following numbers that I will attempt to list in the correct order and comment on however, due to my aging memory, I offer no guarantees.

Walk Away: A bit slower than Eagles tour rendition. Much more like the James Gang recorded version.

The Confessor: Superb guitar duo intro with Dean DeLeo.

Tend My Garden: A tight, off the record like version. The Background singers (1 male, 1 Female, I did not catch the names) were great.

Meadows: A personal favorite of mine. Happy that this one makes the set list every time. I love the way Joe’s Roger Giffin custom 12 string electric sounds. A fabulous axe indeed.

The Bomber / Bolero: Joe really showcases his talents on this one.

Turn to Stone: Outstanding rendition complete with a guitar rich interlude. Joe really shreds it up with Wha Wha. Played on a PRS also used on Farewell I. This axe is a real beauty complete with white soap bar pickups and a tremolo bar.

Life of Illusion: Joe introduced number as being “stuck with this song after he wrote it”. Joe performs in a simple open tuning.

Funk 49: Signature J.W. stuff complete with a terrific interlude where Joe plays percussion along with the two drummers. No blues intro.

Ordinary Average Guy: Dog Doo replaced with “Dog S#&T”

In The City: Boilerplate performance.

Life’s Been Good: See above

Encore:

Life In The Fast Lane: Male B.G. singer took first vocal verse followed by Joe. J.W’s guitar leads tears this one up every time.

Random Observations:

Only disappointment: NO ROCKY MOUNTAIN WAY! Although it was listed on the set list and the talk box was in place on stage. Perhaps the late start had something to do with the exclusion of this classic? (From what I know of Southern California, they probably got stuck in traffic!)

Early in the set, a woman down in front waved a James Gang Rides Again album cover at Joe to request an autograph. Joe stated that “he was playing a concert, I can’t sign now! He then proceeded to sign the cover before starting the next song. Now that’s fan friendly!

The backing band was extremely tight. I hope that they will pull it together again after the Eagles Far East shows and will take thier act to other regions of the US in early 2005.

Bill Lanham of a previous J.W. band lineup was in attendance. I had seen Bill play with Joe at the Fillmore in SF and at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA a few years back.

After the show, band members Dean De Leo, Robert De Leo and Steve Ferrone conducted an unofficial meet and greet outside of the bus. All were outgoing and engaging. Joe made an appearance at the bus door and took the time to sign several album covers, guitars and other memorabilia. Hats off to Joe and to Smokey for providing this opportunity for the fans. These guys get it. Nicely done!

Rob, Joe alternates RMW and Fast Lane for encore. It's either or. We just ended up with Fast Lane Tuesday night.

Cool and well written review!

Did you catch the names of the singers?

Balloonhat,

Thanks for your insight on the encore selections.

Sorry to say, I did not catch the names of the singers alhought the girl looked similar the young lady that sang on the J.W.Antholgy Tour in 1987. I believe her name was Susan Hatton or something like that? Perhaps other postings will provide the names of the singers who were teriffic and are worthy of recognition.

Thanks for the kind words!

Rob

Balloonhat, I made it! I was in the pit, in front of the Marshall at the front of the stage.

Joe and the guys really rocked, and I was very impressed (yet again) with Dean DeLeo, another great in the making.

Joe was just smokin'...and he had the crowd going. It's a lot more evident when he's playing solo, he's a lot less restrained when it's just him and his band. Great setlist, and excellent band - Joe always seems to get the best guys up there with him. I'm really hoping to see more dates in the not-too-distant future!

Susie Hatton would have been the name of the backup singer from the Anthology tour. She is from my hometown (Middletown, Ohio) and had an album of her own in the late '80's or early '90's. She dated Poison's Bret Michaels for a while.

Looks from the pictures I've seen posted that the other background singer is Bernard Fowler. Great singer who has been touring with the Stones on recent tours and who I've seen perform at The Joint in Hollywood with Waddy Wachtel, Rick the Bass player and that gang on Monday nights.

Yes, Susie Hatton is my niece and a grreat singer. She is from Middletown, OH.

Hi all,
i know that "Susie Hatton" is change in the Pornbis as "Danielle Rogers", i don't belief my eyes. Here is a link: http://sellmesex.com/catalog/StarsPage.php?starid=16160

Marian are you saying Susie Hatton is porn star "Danielle Rogers"?. That girl looks nothing like Susie. How disrespectful of you to say such a thing.

Hi,
i've got a picture of Susie and Danielle Rogers http://img127.echo.cx/img127/6047/blondchen117rl.jpg
Ì've got her CD "Body and Soul" and see all the pix of her and say that is the same person.

Mike, Susie was never a porn star, if you look closely their bodies are totally different!. Susie has broad shoulders, wide hips and young skin. The porn star does not..

That porn star was married had her 2nd child in 1992 when Susie was with Bret Micheals of Poison, her longtime boyfriend.

"Randy went on to make films by the dozen, later marrying sweetheart and fellow adult actress Danielle Rogers. They had two children, and soon after the birth of their second child in 1992, Randy and Danielle decided to leave the adult film world for a brief hiatus. The couple moved to Philadelphia, where Randy tried his hand at a variety of odd jobs, including running a gym. The couple returned to Southern California in mid-1998 to resume work in the wild world of adult video, which is just when I happened to catch Randy doing "Mr. Milky."

Please have some respect for her!.

I am Susie's cousin and I can say with a clear conscience that Danielle the porn star is not Susie. They really dont even look that similar. She probably just turned some internet porn surfing loser down and he decided to try and give her a bad rap...Idiot...Try again.
