In The Dark

So here I am with my usual Thursday night post and I have nothing to report.

Nothing.

I mean, after last week’s episode you’d have thought there would be oodles to talk about.  I did remember last week’s episode correctly, right? Pam breaking up with Roy! Jim trying to eat off Libby’s face! I didn’t dream all of that did I? It happened, right?

You sure as hell wouldn’t know it. In fact there was no Jim and no Pam in this episode at all. There was just some stupid stuff about Michael burning his foot on a George Foreman grill. I guess it’s up to us to make sense of all of this. I don’t know what else we can do at this point. Let’s gather the facts, shall we?

Here’s what we know for sure based on last night’s episode:

Ryan is sitting behind reception.   

Jim is nowhere to be found.

This is what we learn from talking heads:

Ryan:  Yeah, whenever Pam is out, I get to cover reception which is great because she doesn’t have a lot to do. I wrote a paper for Econ and got the high score on Mine Sweeper yesterday.

Dwight:  Apparently, Jim Halpert is sick. He’s been sick for 4 days. I offered to investigate this “illness” but Michael won’t let me. All I know is that he better come back with a doctor’s note…and a rash…or a scar.

Toby:  You know I can’t comment on that. It’s just that…sometimes things around here can be a little too much, you know. We all take mental health days.

Kevin: Do I remember what happened after the Booze Cruise? Nah. I was pretty loaded. It was a BOOOOZE Cruise (Kevin giggle)

The only other thing we got from the footage was a shot of Roy loading some boxes in the warehouse and glaring at the camera.

Our final clue to the puzzle is that ScrantonRose wrote the following on the message board: “I’ve kept this to myself because it just didn’t seem right sharing this, but Libby is my vet. She’s very nice (and super pretty) and she’s been at work this week, so you can stop your speculating about her and Jim running off together.”

Frustrating isn’t it? All these little scraps of information that we have to try to meld into the real story.

I feel like Lenny on Law & Order…just trying to put together clues. Here’s what I’ve got.

1. We know that Pam and Roy broke up. From the way Roy glared at the camera, we can assume that they haven’t gotten back together.

2. We can assume that Pam is taking time off of work to deal with the breakup. Maybe she moved out or maybe she just doesn’t want to answer any questions. We can also assume that Pam hasn’t told anyone. If she had, you can bet there would have been some sort of comment from Kelly.

I feel pretty good about my assumptions there. What I can’t get my head around is why Jim isn’t at work. Where is he? This is all I can come up with.

1. He’s exhausted from the regular sexing up he’s been getting from Libby.

2. Roy beat him up really bad (this one scares me because it could be true)

3. Pam told Jim that she broke up with Roy and they fell into each other’s arms. They ran off together.

4. ??????????

Of course all of this conjecture is probably moot….remember, what we saw tonight happened a week ago, so as I’m writing this, it’s been almost two weeks since the Booze Cruise. Anything could be going on.

We deserve to know what happened.

We have a right to know what’s been going on.

Talk Me Off The Edge, Okay?

It's days like this that I really think that this documentary might actually be scripted. The amount of soap-opera-esque drama going on can't be for real, can it?  Does this stuff happen in real life? I just don't get it.

Let me try to explain. Last night's episode was entitled "Booze Cruise" and took place on a boat floating around a lake outside of Scranton. It was one of Michael's camaraderie/leadership events and it started out great.

Pam brought her brother (what a cutie!) and Jim brought Libby :(   I was really excited to see that Roy wasn't there, but more on him later.

Things started out really good. The camera caught lots of drinking and laughing and I was even getting more of a buddy vibe from Jim and Libby than I was of a boyfriend/girlfriend vibe. People in the chatroom last night agreed with me. There was still a little weird tension between Jim and Pam that I can't put my finger on, but still. I think most of America held their collective breath when Pam went out on deck and Jim was there.

And then nothing happened. 27 seconds of nothing to be exact. They just stared at each other and I thought for sure Pam was going to say something. She looked like it was right there on the tip of her tongue and then...nothing.  I know that bit of the show will be replayed and anyalyzed to death, but for me personally, I don't know if I can stand to watch it again.

And then there was the tag. I know many of you had your DVR cut this off, so I will explain it for you as clearly as I can. I feel like this should come with a warning, but it's all so sad and awful I don't know what I'd warn you against. I guess just read the next part at your own risk.

Okay...Tag

The boat is at the dock and everyone is coming down the gangplank. Jim is holding Libby's hand. They walk down and head to the right. The camera swings over and you can see that Roy is there waiting to pick up Pam.  Pam comes down the gangplank and she and Roy start walking the same way Jim and Libby were. The camera zooms in on Jim and Libby and they are TOTALLY MAKING OUT AGAINST THE SIDE OF JIM's CAR!!!.  Gross, I know, right?

Anyway, camera back on Roy and Pam and it's like they've stopped to watch(?) or maybe they don't want to keep walking because they'd interrupt them. Roy's got this big smile on his face. He kind of chuckles and says, "Remember when we first started dating and we couldn't keep our hands off each other? Do you think they'll be like us one day? Engaged and everything?"

And then, in this totally cold, robotic voice Pam says, "No. AND ROY...I THINK WE SHOULD BREAK UP. I DON'T WANT TO GET MARRIED ANYMORE."

And before you can even process that, the camera zooms in on the grossness that is Libby, all over Jim and Jim says, "Do you want to come back to my place tonight?" and Libby nods and they get in the car.

THE HELL?????

Pam FINALLY comes to her senses about Roy and Jim is heading off with some cheap slut?? (Sorry Libby Lovers). 

I don't even know what to think anymore and for the first time since I became obsessed with this show, I don't know if I have the heart to watch next week.

I'll ask the question that I asked at the beginning of this post. Do you think this is real?

I think I'm going to go read some fanfic to feel better.

Who Is This Hussy?

Okay everyone. I'm trying to remain calm. I mean, I know it's totally stupid to obsess about people I don't know, but someone has got to slap some sense into these people. Ugh!

So, here's the deal. If you don't want to get totally disillusioned with Mr. Jim Halpert, I suggest you don't read any further.

I received the following email from ScrantonInsider who, as some of you know lives in Scranton. I'll just let her tell you:

So, it's kind of weird that I live in Scranton and the only people from the show that I've ever seen have been Kelly at Steamtown (she's always there) and Kevin at my dad's company party (his girlfriend works with my dad).  Anyway, some friends and I were meeting up for lunch before class today at this local sandwich place.  We're sitting there, enjoying our lunch when all of a sudden, I look up and Jim comes in. I know...Jim! Under normal circumstances, I'd be describing to you how hot he looked (very!) and what he ordered (Roast Beef...not ham!!!) but I was a little distracted by what he came in with.

He was with a girl. It wasn't Pam. They looked "together" if you know what I mean. It's not like they were making out, but he held out her chair for her and they laughed and joked around. I couldn't stop watching even though my friends were giving me a hard time. He put his hand over hers a couple of times and when they left he had his hand on her back. I don't know how serious they are, but all of my friends agreed that they definitley looked like a couple. I know Jim was BSing and saying he wanted to go on dates, but that was just a front, right? What about Pam?

I know you all are going to be wondering, so this girl...she looked to be about Jim's age (maybe even a couple of years older). She was wearing blue and pink scrubs with what I think were kittens on them. Dark blonde hair in a pony tale, sneakers. I hate to tell you this, but she was cute. She looked kind of like Julia Stiles, but not as pinched if that makes any sense. She was tall too...taller than Pam. I went to the restroom once and made it so I had to walk past them. All I overheard was him say was "...playstation" and she called him "Halpert".

I am so bummed that my first Jim sighting was with this new girl. We HAVE to find out who this is and what the deal is. Do you think the show will mention her? And just so you don't think I'm making this all up, I've sent Marissa a short video that I took with my phone. This all happened like 5 minutes ago. I'm assuming Jim was on his lunch break and I bet Marissa will have this up before he even gets back to Dunder-Mifflin.

ScrantonInsider did send me a video. It's in a weird format and I'm trying to get it so I can post it here for you, but you can trust me that this is legit. The video will break your heart if you are a Jammer. I'll get it posted as soon as I can. Until then, what do you think? Is JAM dead?

UPDATE: I still can't get the video to post, but I grabbed a screenshot from it. It's really blurry (remember, it was captured clandestinly on a phone) but I can tell you that it is most assuredly Jim Halpert.

 

WTF ARE YOU THINKING, PAM???? WTF ARE YOU DOING, JIM????

Okay. You all know that I love Jim and Pam (obviously). I think she's someone worth admiring. She's not a celebrity or wealthy and just goes through her day trying to make a good life for herself and the people she loves. There are a lot of Pams out there in the world and it's nice to remember that being a woman doesn't mean showing your lady-parts to everyone with a camera.

And Jim is just the definition of what a regular good guy is. He's smart, hardsome, funny, warm and caring. All of us should be so lucky to have a little Jim Halpert in our lives.

But....

After watching last night's episode, I wonder if something has gotten into the water in Scranton. Have Jim and Pam been replaced with pod people?  I offer into evidence these two talking heads from last night (I kind of spliced a couple of THs and Voice Overs together to make the complete quotes).

Pam

"Jim is just...Jim is a great friend. He's probably my best friend, well except for Roy. We had a little quarrel last week over something so stupid. Anyway, I wanted to do something nice for him. He broke up with Katy a while ago and he just deserves to be with someone as awesome as he is. So, yeah...I fixed him up with a friend of my brother's. She's a great girl and I think she and Jim will really hit it off.  Maybe if things work out they can double with Roy and I...it's been a while since we've been on a date, or um...out."

Jim

"How do I feel about Pam setting me up on a date? Well, I'm anxious. I'm not really a blind date kind of guy, but both Pam and her brother have assured me that she's normal and disease free, so, yeah...it's kind of cool. What's that? Does it bother me that Pam's trying to fix me up? Why would it bother me? Listen, I know you guys have an obligation to make this show interesting, because I can't imagine how this place is interesting to anyone beside Xerox fetishists, but seriously...Pam and I are friends and that's it.  Friends look out for each other and want each other to be happy. She's happy with Roy and I...well, I deserve to be happy too. I'm really looking forward to meeting someone new, okay?"

Well...there you guys go. What do you think? Are they in denial? Have we been wrong? I need my JAM!!!!  I mean I've gotten used to Pam acting like she doesn't feel anything for Jim, but this Jim TH really made me uneasy. He's kind of confided in the cameras in the past, but it's almost like he's trying to convince himself, maybe himself, that he doesn't have feelings for Pam.

So frustrating!!! Is it next week yet?!?!  Who is this girl!?! I hope she's hideous or a bitch or something.

What the producers have to say

I know we've been having a lot of discussion about the "silent stairwell scene" and apparently, the discussion has even reached people who aren't die hard doc-fans like we are. Some people think the scene was an invasion of privacy...especially since it was out of context, had no sound and seemed emotionally intense.  Other people think that when Jim and Pam (and everyone else) signed the paperwork for the documentary, they knew they were being filmed and had no expectation of privacy. I found this from an official Q and A blog on the official site. Fans got to ask Iris Williams, the executive producer some questions.  I've copied and pasted the relevant parts below:

Q: Why did you decide to air the black and white stairwell scene without sound and without context? Do you feel bad about invading privacy like this?

IW:  We had quite a discussion about this in our production offices. Our goal with this entire documentary was to give viewers a look at the workings on an American office environment. We want them to see a bit of themselves in it, but to also identify with univseral themes like rivalry, competition, boredom, motivation, ambition, friendship....you get the idea.  That means that we have to show everything. I think the beauty of this scene is that even we, the documentarians, don't know what's being said. We can guess, just like the rest of you, but we don't know for sure. We're just presenting information.

As for the invasion of privacy, all subjects know that they can be filmed at any time. They've kind of waived their right to privacy on company property or on comapny time.  It's important that we be able to film that way in order to maintain authenticity.

SOOOOO.....

What The Heck Was That????

Okay guys. I know you saw it in tonight's episode, but we've got to talk about this. What was that? Why was there no sound?  UGH!!!!!

Let me calm down for a second, if you didn't see tonight's episode, you'll have to wait until the clips show up on YouTube because I don't have the ability to capture them. I'll describe what happened though.

Jim was in the stairwell and it seemed like he was waiting for Pam (he was looking mighty lanky leaning up against the wall, if you know what I mean).  When Pam showed up, they joked around for a minute or so and then things got intense!!!!  The way the camera was angled, we could only see Jim's face. The footage looks like it was taken from a security camera or something...it's all black and white and stationary.

Anyway...they joke around for a minute and then Jim looks kind of concerned for Pam. Then he looks sort of dazed and confused, but he starts nodding, like a lot, like he's totally agreeing with whatever she's saying.

And then it happens. It's like Jim just breaks. You can see this look on his face that is just so heartbroken and haunted and I really don't have the words to describe it.  It's like he wants to tell her something (I bet you can guess what I hoped he'd tell her) really bad. It's kind of awful to watch (hot...but awful).

Pam puts her hand on his forearm (lucky girl!) for a while, but Jim seems to get angrier and angrier. He finally rips his arm away from her and it looks like he says something kind of mean and then he stomps out.

Pam looks for a second like she's going to go after him, but then she sinks down on the floor and cries.

The whole time this is going on, they are playing these talking heads over them. I know they'll be up at the quote sites, but I wanted to archive them here.

Jim TH:  Pam and I are friends. That's it. I don't know why everyone is so interested in trying to make something out of that. We hang out at work. We make the day go by a little faster for each other, but that's it. She's engaged to Roy. End of story.  (I wish we could see him while he's saying this because  there's something funny about his voice. It's kind of emotional. I wish I were a better writer so I could explain it better for you guys!)

Pam TH:  Jim is a great guy. Wait. I take that back. Jim is a special guy. There aren't many like him out there and I hope that one day he finds the happiness that he deserves. He should be as happy as Roy and I are. Everyone should.

BTW, the editors are just geniuses because Pam's TH is superimposed over the shot of her crying. GAH!

So, what do you think? What were they fighting and/or talking about? 

I have a friend that has deaf parents and she can lip read really well, but she said that the angles of the shot are just wrong for trying to figure out what's being said. The only thing she could make out was that Jim definately said "unicorns".  WTH?????
